If the book is in a format that can be read by a Kindle device, all that is required is for the user to plug in their E-reader and click on “Send to device” in the toolbar. A window opens, allowing the user to select the e-book they wish to add to their calibre library, and the book is added. Books are added with a simple click on the “Add Books” icon at the top left of the tool bar.
The screen may vary depending on what version of the program one has, what books one has in their library, and what system they are running Calibre on. When the application is opened, the user is presented with a screen similar to fig 1.1: The installation procedure is fairly standard for this type of application, allowing the user to choose where to store it, and for a shortcut to be placed on the desktop and in the start menu. This is easily done through the download URL (link working at the time of writing this review). To start with, one has to download and install the application. It can also be used on later Windows versions and a 32 bit version is available, as well as builds for Linux systems, Mac OS and portable use. I have experience of using the 64 bit version of the program on a laptop running Windows 8, so this will be the focus of my review. Its main function is to take E-publications, and convert them into formats that can be read by an E-reader, or the Kindle application available on the amazon website, allowing the user to then upload converted files to their device, creating a library of converted files on the user’s computer system. Calibre is a freeware E-book management application.
